The Herds
Lagos.

The Herds is a large-scale public art and climate awareness project that uses the movement of sculptural animal herds traversing from the Congo Basin to Norway, passing through Lagos, as a powerful metaphor for environmental displacement. As animals around the world are increasingly forced to migrate due to climate change, habitat loss, and human intervention, The Herds brings these realities into public view, transforming city streets into spaces for reflection, dialogue, and collective action.

As producer of the Lagos edition, A Whitespace Creative Arts (AWCA) Foundation was responsible for translating the project's global vision into a locally resonant experience. Working with local artisans, performers, fabricators, and communities, AWCA led the production and delivery of the procession, overseeing everything from fabrication and logistics to rehearsals, site coordination, and live activation.

Beyond execution, AWCA anchored the project within the realities of Lagos, connecting its themes of migration and environmental change to local conversations around flooding, coastal erosion, waste management, and urban growth. Through workshops, public programmes, and community engagement initiatives, the foundation created opportunities for artists, students, and residents to participate in the project and contribute to conversations about the city's climate future.

In Lagos, The Herds became more than a public art intervention. It became a shared civic experience that demonstrated how art can make complex environmental issues visible, accessible, and deeply human.
