Project Overview

Some brands live on shelves. Others live in people.

For seventy-five years, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) has been present in the moments Nigerians remember most. Birthdays and weddings. School parties and viewing centres. Corner shops and family living rooms. Across generations, its products have become woven into the rituals, celebrations, and everyday moments that make up Nigerian life.

A Whitespace Creative Arts (AWCA) Foundation conceived Taste of the Occasion as an immersive exhibition exploring the idea that a brand's history can also be a nation's cultural history. Rather than telling the story of NBC through products alone, the exhibition traced its journey through the memories, places, people, and occasions that have shaped life in Nigeria since 1951.

Drawing on archival material, personal stories, advertising, photography, interactive installations, and recreated everyday environments, visitors moved through a series of experiences that connected NBC's evolution with the country's own changing social and cultural landscape. The exhibition invited audiences to remember, reflect, and recognise themselves within the archive.
