Museum in
the Making.

Museum in the Making challenged the conventional idea of what it means to inaugurate a museum. Rather than unveiling a finished institution, the project invited the public into the process of its creation. Over two days in Benin City, artists, archaeologists, architects, scholars, and cultural practitioners came together to ask a fundamental question: what should a twenty-first-century West African museum be?

Conceived as a preview of MOWAA's first purpose-built facility, the programme extended far beyond a ceremonial launch. Visitors explored the Institute through hard-hat tours, engaged in conversations on archaeology, restitution, architecture, conservation, and contemporary art, participated in workshops on earthen construction and traditional pottery, and ventured beyond the campus into Benin City's historic neighbourhoods and artist studios. Every experience reinforced the idea that museums are not simply places where objects are displayed, but spaces where knowledge is produced, shared, and continuously questioned.

A Whitespace Creative Arts (AWCA) Foundation led the creative production and delivery of Museum in the Making, working closely with MOWAA to translate its institutional vision into an immersive public experience. From shaping the visitor journey and producing exhibitions, installations, and activations across the campus to coordinating workshops, talks, performances, guest experiences, and city-wide cultural programming, AWCA orchestrated a multidisciplinary event that brought together architecture, heritage, education, and public engagement into a cohesive whole.

By making the process of building a museum visible, through conversation, experimentation, and shared experience, the programme demonstrated that museums are not static repositories of history, but evolving civic spaces shaped by the communities they serve. It offered a compelling model for how cultural institutions can begin not with a finished building, but with an ongoing dialogue about whose histories they preserve, whose knowledge they celebrate, and whose futures they help imagine.
