Project Overview
Lagos Regatta 2024 reimagined one of the city's oldest cultural traditions as a large-scale public celebration of Lagos' relationship with water. Commissioned by the Lagos State Ministry of Art & Tourism under the theme Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life, the project sought to reconnect audiences with the waterways that have shaped the city's history while transforming the annual Regatta into an immersive, city-wide cultural experience.
More than a day of boat races and parades, the 2024 edition positioned the lagoon as the heart of the celebration. A floating performance stage anchored the programme on the water, while live broadcasts connected audiences across multiple public viewing centres throughout Lagos, allowing people to experience the Regatta from different parts of the city. Music, performance, procession, and public gathering came together to celebrate the lagoon as the foundation of Lagos' cultural identity.
A Whitespace Creative Arts (AWCA) Foundation led the experience design and production planning for the event, developing the creative framework that unified the Regatta across its many locations and audiences. From shaping the visitor journey and coordinating public viewing centres to designing activation spaces, managing stakeholder engagement, and integrating sustainability initiatives into the programme, AWCA worked across creative, operational, and logistical teams to deliver a seamless experience at city scale. The team also oversaw on-site coordination, ensuring that every element, from public engagement to guest experience, worked together as part of a cohesive whole.
The result was a Regatta that honoured tradition while embracing new possibilities for public cultural experiences. By activating Lagos' waterfront as a shared civic space and extending the celebration beyond a single location, the project reintroduced the lagoon as a place of memory, gathering, and belonging, demonstrating how thoughtful cultural production can reconnect a city with one of its defining landscapes.
