Building A Nation: Ben Enwonwu and the Impact of Sculpture examined the work of Ben Enwonwu not simply as a celebrated artist, but as one of the architects of Nigeria's cultural identity. Developed for the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in partnership with Coronation Group and Bonhams, the exhibition brought together some of Enwonwu's most significant sculptures, including his iconic 1956 bronze portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, to explore how sculpture became a powerful medium for articulating ideas of nationhood, self-determination, and African modernity.

Rather than presenting the works as isolated masterpieces, the exhibition traced Enwonwu's artistic journey within the broader story of Nigeria's emergence as an independent nation. Archival photographs, personal correspondence, sketches, and sculptural works revealed his creative process while drawing connections between ancient Nigerian artistic traditions and the modern cultural identity he helped shape. The exhibition invited visitors to consider sculpture not only as an artistic practice but as a form of storytelling capable of preserving history, expressing national aspirations, and connecting generations.

AWCA led the exhibition design and production, transforming the galleries of the National Museum into a carefully sequenced narrative experience. Working across exhibition architecture, fabrication, interpretation, and visitor experience, the team designed bespoke plinths, illuminated archival displays, and immersive exhibition environments that guided audiences through Enwonwu's life and legacy. Historical quotations, timelines, and layered visual storytelling were woven throughout the exhibition, ensuring that every gallery deepened visitors' understanding of the artist's influence on Nigerian and Pan-African cultural history.

Building A Nation reintroduced Ben Enwonwu to contemporary audiences as a visionary whose work helped define how Nigeria saw itself during a pivotal moment in its history.
