Afrobeat Rebellion was an exhibition and cultural programme that explored Afrobeat as more than a musical genre. Rooted in the revolutionary legacy of Fela Kuti and the generations of artists, activists, and cultural practitioners influenced by his work, the project examined how music can become a tool for political expression, social critique, and collective action.

Originally staged in Paris, the exhibition was brought to Lagos with A Whitespace Creative Arts (AWCA) Foundation as producers and the opportunity to reconnect the story to the city that shaped it. Rather than simply reproducing the exhibition in a new location, AWCA worked closely with a diverse network of cultural practitioners to reimagine it for a Nigerian audience. The project expanded the collection of works on display, introduced new perspectives and voices, and developed a robust programme of public engagement that extended the exhibition beyond the gallery walls.

Afrobeat Rebellion created space for new audiences to encounter the history and spirit of Afrobeat, deepened public engagement with one of Africa's most influential cultural movements, and demonstrated how thoughtful collaboration can bridge global narratives and local realities. Through this process, AWCA showed how exhibitions can serve not only as sites of preservation but also as platforms for dialogue, learning, and collective imagination.
